As I’m sure you’re all aware a few days ago Greta Thunberg, a teenager from Sweden, spoke at the United Nations General Assembly about climate change. Pointedly, she called out adults and world leaders for not doing enough to protect the environment and made it clear she was not impressed with their lack of action.
While Thunberg appears to be quite capable of defending herself from the barbs and condescension coming from the very people she’s calling out and their rabid supporters, some of the vitriol online directed towards a young person merely standing up for their beliefs was quite extreme to say the least.
Old enough to put yourself out there old enough to be trashed on SM for being horrible
I just want these people to die. Simple as that. Every single one of them. And their parents.
I’d like to punch her in the face.
Where are her parents, where are her teachers, where are her pastors?
Honest question. Have you ever seen a more punchable face than this kid’s?
wanna see her go screaming, head first, into the woodchipper
what a Shit head
disguesting. her parents must be so proud.
While I am disgusted by her behavior I am heartened by the outrage that so many have expressed on social media. Stand up.
This shitass is the best argument supporting abortion
Yeah where the fuck is that little shithead? And I would like her defenders, parents or whomever put that bile into her dim brain, to show up on television and make their case. But they must be shouted down with someone who has actual facts and knows history.
Like, fuck. Get a grip right? Even if you don’t agree with what they’re saying; calling for a young person to be assaulted, simply for acting in congruence with their beliefs, is pretty abhorrent.
Surely we can all agree on that? Right?
Ok, now that we’ve agreed threatening someone with violence over social media is morally reprehensible and the rest of the hateful vitriol is unnecessary at best, what if I told you the above quotes weren’t from the usual right-wing Republican/Liberal suspects or directed toward Greta Thunberg.
What if I told you they were from left-wing Democrat/Greens supporters and were directed towards another young person standing up for what they believed in?
I gender swapped the pronouns but all of the above quotes were lifted from social media and directed towards 16-year-old Nicholas Sandmann. Remember him? You may not remember the name but you certainly remember this image…
Not to dive too deep into it, but to add a little context for the uninitiated, here’s a quick rundown on how the above image (and those quotes) came to be:
In January of this year a Kentucky High School student was attending an anti-abortion March for Life rally (I’m pro-choice) with his fellow students. He came into conflict with Native American activist Nathan Phillips who was attending an Indigenous Peoples March.
The above image and the short video it came from painted him as a smirking villain but this was all later re-contextualized when a longer video surfaced showing a group of Black Hebrew Israelites shouting combative, homophobic and racist slurs at the high school students as well as the Native American marchers. Further to this, Phillips himself later clarified that it was he who had approached the crowd of students and moved into Sandmann’s personal space, not the opposite as was widely reported in the media.
But that’s a tale for another time.
What’s relevant to the point I’m trying to make here is that eager to create a very specific narrative certain sections of the media initially and wrongly, perhaps deliberately, misrepresented the situation and his actions. Which prompted those on the left to vilify Sandmann on social media and even made death threats towards him.
Which is exactly what those on the right are currently doing to Greta Thunberg.
The lesson here is that adults on both the left and the right will happily tear a young person to shreds and threaten them with bodily harm if they dare threaten their beliefs.
I’m not sure why y’all don’t get along, to me it seems like you’re not so different after all.
